Barbie, a Rare Beauty

There are so many new Barbie products being released this holiday season is it wrong to say I feel like Santa Claus? I’m fairly certain I could make a strong case for it. First of all, I have a list and I definitely check it twice. Second, there are more helpers in my world than I can count. Through my work I get to deliver toys and gifts to the masses, and now I can say there is even a book that tells my story…or rather her story, Barbie’s story.

In 1983 I bought a Barbie for my daughter; the first I had purchased as an adult. It’s hard to describe the rush of memories that came to me as I held the box in my hand. I can only describe it as stepping back into my childhood. I had no idea then that over the next 27 years, thousands of Barbie treasures; new, vintage, rare, and prototypes would pass through my hands.

After my son became ill, I decided to leave nursing and start buying and selling Barbie items. “Sandi Holder’s Doll Attic” began as web based business which included auctions several times a year and attending annual conventions where I met friends I now consider family. Moving the shop to a new facility allowed me to include a museum where children can come for birthday parties, tours and even build their own Barbie. The results of these efforts have been overwhelming.

The retail website allows anyone to own their special piece or add to their collection. The auction catalog provides fantastic photos and amazing descriptions of all the items which really help educate buyers about countless little known treasures. The yearly conventions give the collecting community a chance to share and enjoy all the amazing dolls, clothing and accessories. Opening the Barbie museum has allowed me to make those rarities available for all to see and introduce new generations to the Barbie franchise.

Despite my efforts, there are still so many things I have a chance to see that most collectors don’t even know exist. I wanted to find a way to make these amazing items available to a larger audience. My book, “Barbie, a Rare Beauty”, has given me the opportunity to share to a much larger audience. It provides authenticated information and rarely seen photographs. Each page is intended to bring a smile and inspiration to the reader because really, isn’t that what Barbie represents for most of us? She represents what we all want to be, inspires us to pursue those dreams, and brings enormous joy to children everywhere.

Ok, so it’s true, the Santa suit would be way too big for me; but that’s ok because I’ve been so blessed. I’m living my dream, inspired daily and so lucky to bring joy to my amazing customers. I guess my story and Barbie’s story are not so different after all. Who knew?
